I couldn't bring myself to actually like any of the characters and I didn't care about them. But the most important part of it as a JRPG is that the writing and story is just not engaging at all. I listen to the soundtrack on the regular, the pixel graphics are both nostalgic and gorgeous, and the battle system is interesting enough to be engaging. Octopath Traveler was a game where I loved almost everything about it. For a long time, I just played computer online games and have only recently started getting back into JRPGs since getting my Switch, and honestly, I've just felt more or less. They really felt like the gold standard for JRPGs. In the past, I absolutely loved the stuff that came out from SE.
